Beginning Sound Clip Cards
I created these bright strips as a simple way for my Four to review letter sounds.
The download includes 26 strips. I printed the pages on card stock and laminated them (with my awesome home laminator). Then I cut the strips apart and set them out with some clothes pins.
For each strip, my son clipped the picture that started with the letter on the left. If you want to make these self checking, you could draw a little dot on the back where the clothespin should go. Then your child could easily flip over the card after he’s clipped it to see if he’s right.
Perfect for a classroom center or a kitchen table activity!
To make these easy to store, you could simply bind them with a rubber band OR punch a hole in the left corner and use a metal ring to keep the set together, like I did with my bear pattern strips. Your child might want to flip through the cards and point to each picture, or you could take them off the ring so he can clip them.

(Stevenson & Newman, 1986).

Family Playing Cards: take ‘em, make ‘em, then play!
A few years ago, I burned the midnight oil way too close to the finish line, in an attempt to create Family Playing Cards for Maddy, Owen, and Cora.
And though I made the work harder than it needed to be, it was well worth it.
The kids have used the cards steadily for the last two years, playing games, using them as ‘cheaters’ when they made cards, wrote notes, and developed stories with their family as the main characters.
This year, I utilized my sweet, sweet laptop a little more–and I called in the resources of a good pal–so my work was a little easier. So with a little help from my friends, I created family playing cards for my kiddos, adding new cousins and Brady.
But I also made a set for our niece and nephews, and I’m hoping that they have as much fun learning our names as we have had learning theirs.
Phonemic Activities for the Preschool or Elementary Classroom
By: Marilyn J. Adams, Barbara Foorman, Ingvar Lundberg, and Terri Beeler (2004)
This article features activities designed to stimulate the development of phonemic awareness in preschool and elementary school children. The activities originally appeared in the book Phonemic Awareness in Young Children: A Classroom Curriculum.
Listening to sequences of sounds
From chapter 3: Listening games
Objective
To develop the memory and attentional abilities for thinking about sequences of sounds and the language for discussing them.
Materials needed
Objects that make interesting, distinctive sounds. Some examples follow:
banging on wall/table/lap
blowing blowing a whistle blowing nose clapping clicking with tongue closing purse coloring hard on paper coughing crumpling paper cutting with a knife cutting with scissors dropping (various things) drumming with fingers eating an apple folding paper hammering hopping noisy chewing |
opening window or drawer

35 Name Activities for Preschoolers
Last year in three year old preschool, names were a big deal. So I can only suppose they will be again this year in four year old preschool.
Henry learned to recognize his name pretty early on. At first, he thought any word that started [or even had one] with an H meant it was his name. But he soon learned that there was more to it than that.
Throughout the year they worked on name recognition and spelling. By the end of last year, Henry was able to spell his first name [and write it!!]. He even was able to spell it backwards, which shocked me!
Now, its onto our last name… which for reason seems daunting to me. But with some help of these activities I found, the should come fast enough. Just applying it to our last name instead of his first!
Have some fun with your kids learning to recognize their very own name [it’s very special to them, make it be a special thing!] and then learn to spell it too! They’ll be so proud and you’ll be one proud mama!
Here are 35 name activities for your preschooler learn to recognize and spell their name!
Name Recognition
Put their name up every where. Label everything of theirs with their name. Use their name in your activities! Have fun with it!
